This lightweight merino hoodie excels at sun protection for hiking and outdoor activities. Customers praised its comfort, saying it's "so soft" and "not itchy." The fabric performs well in warm weather and offers excellent coverage. However, some concerns include inconsistent sizing (runs long/loose), durability issues with holes appearing after washing, and one report of itchiness and sunburn.

  • I wore this hoodie for five weeks...it was totally awesome. Not itchy, great neck coverage.
  • Truly my new favorite piece of gear. Fabric feels wonderful, stays cool in warm weather.
  • So soft and comfortable! Works great as a sun shirt, I don't baby it and it looks new still.

Sizing off?

So I ordered an XL after messureing myself and comparing it to the sizing chart. My chest mesures 42 inches, my hip is 46 inches, which, according to the sizing chart, puts me at an XL. But in reality I've gotten a dress now. The hoodie is way too long (32.6 inches) and not snug around chest or hip at all but more than loose. Oh, I am 5.1 feet tall by the way. Maybe it will shrink with washing?

Maybe it's my fault because I use cm not inches, but surely I can't have messured so wrongly?

Anyways, the quality seems fine, the color is beautiful and the hood is plenty spacious but I will have to alter the hoodie myself for it to be wearable.

Hey Tam,

We're sorry to hear you're facing issues with the sizing of your hoodie.

The measurements should all be accurate and are measured in inches, not centimeters. Maybe that's where the size chart went wrong in your case.

Either way, we'd be happy to further discuss it with you via our email customerservice@wuruwool.com and get you situated with a product you can both enjoy and feel confident in.

If you haven't washed it yet, we always offer free exchanges on our products and would be happy to set that up for you.

Thanks!

Awesome and just what I needed.

I got this hoodie for five weeks of SUP camping. I wanted something lightweight that would fit over my hydroskins and under my PFD and would provide sunblock...but then I could wear it around my campsites at night and be cozy. I wore this hoodie for five weeks and washed it once (because I fell on a mudflat). It performed exactly as I needed it to...it was totally awesome. Not itchy (absolutely clutch), great neck coverage, super length and hood. Now. I am 5'4", 130 lbs, and wear H cup (yes, there is such a thing) bras. For me the medium was probably more form fitting than I would normally wear, so it'll be a base or mid layer now that I am done paddling. BUT, I wanted that fit for the whole "over the wetsuit/under the PFD" thing. All in all I'm super glad I bought it and that it was my shirt for five weeks.

Love it!

I love the hoody. It feels great and is not too warm and not too cold. It works well against sun and most mosquitoes/sand flies. I usually always wore tsirts when hiking, but the hoody now replaces these, especially when I'm on long hikes. It takes quite a long time to smell bad (comparable to e.g. icebreaker) and then you can wash it in cold river water (without soap). It dries quickly. The material is thin and you have to be a little bit careful, but I don't know of any nice&thin merino shirt where this isn't the case. First I wanted the blue hoody but it was sold out. However, it only took two days for me to fall in love with the orange color. I would also like to thank the customer service for quickly processing my request after something went wrong. In summary I am extremely happy with the hoody, its simple, fitts well (have it in S), looks good and does what it needs to do :)

Looking for sunshine

I found this top while looking for some new wool pieces to add to my outdoor/active wardrobe. My main activities are hiking, biking, running, and paddleboarding, and it's always a treat to find women's clothing that can keep up.

Pros: I absolutely love the color! I got the one in yellow for high visibility and got compliments the first day I wore it out. The fabric is comfortable to wear and temperature regulates as I expect wool to do. I took it out for a run on a fairly warm day and was not overheated. The sleeve length is excellent so the backs of my hands are protected. The hood collar wraps just so with a slight brim for shade, and I also love the droptail for a little bum coverage!

Cons: The overall fit is a smidge snug, a slightly closer fit than my other wool-based running tops. I would still call the garment true to size. The thumb holes don't quite line up with my thumbs, but seem a bit closer to the backs of my hands. However, the most concerning point for me is that I found a small hole in the garment after a single use, located in the back neck area of the hood. I am disappointed to find a hole right away, especially in such an odd area. I would expect that a garment at this price point would be of higher quality. I'll find a way to mend the hole so I can keep using the shirt, but I don't think I would purchase another of these tops.

Love the style and feel but small hole in sleeve

I love the style, color, & the feel of the fabric. I ended up finding a small hole in my sleeve after I had worn it.

Up for the challenge

I purchased the women’s orange hoodie in February ‘22 and waited to review it to see how it would hold up to extensive use. I wore this hoodie for a backcountry backpacking job, which averaged 50 miles weekly over a four month period in the southwest high desert. I also wore it on the JMT this past summer. After about 800 trail miles, the hoodie held up to the challenge.

The material is the softest I’ve found so far. It kept me cool in 95 degree heat and warm when I started my mornings at 25 degrees. It also kept me warm while wet one day when the weather kept shifting from sun-rain-snow. The recommended fit guide is true to size. Some have commented on the thumb hole location being off. I find it was placed perfectly for hiking with poles, The hood size kept the sun off my face and kept the bugs away. It did not pull on the neckline either. I did have an issue the side seam material not being folded enough in one place for the sewing thread to fully take. A friend who is a seamstress was able to fix it. The shirt is now showing some thinning on the upper back from my pack rubbing, but that is expected. It also has some fading and runs in the material from branch snags, but is no fault of the workmanship.

It looks a bit worse for wear right now but still has many trail miles left in it. I have purchased another for the upcoming season.

Wonderful, soft and lightweight merino.hoodie

I wanted the blue hoodie but it has been out of stock in the size I need for months. I was worried that the coral was just too bright for me.

About a month ago I decided to try it. I am 5’4” and my bust is 36H which puts me into an XL for most tops and that is the size I ordered.

It took about a day for me to absolutely fall in love with the color - it is a happy color!

I wore it every day for the first week. It got softer and more comfortable each day. I washed it and it got even softer and seemed to fit better with each washing.

I really like the hoodie style too. Because is isn’t huge it doesn’t drag back on the neckline - this sits very quietly and elegantly compared to the huge hoodie tops. And it still easily goes over my baseball cap. I have two other summer merino hoodies and this one is by far my favorite purely because I don’t need to adjust the top due to the hood weight. And I like how high the neckline sits.

The very simple thumb holes work well. As someone else noted in their review, the loop is attached a bit too far over so the sleeve does twist a bit.

I added a few photos as I wished there were more when I was trying to decide.

I am looking forward to getting the hoodie in blue too! Hoping it’s restocked in XL soon.

Itchy, unlike any other merino base layers, and limited sun protection

I'm a bit of a wool fiend — I wear only wool bras, most of my underpants are wool, all my base-layer tops are wool and on most days I'm wearing wool shirts and sweaters, too. I love the feel of merino. This hoodie is the first merino garment I've found intolerably itchy, and it's particularly so when moving. I question the quality of its "premium merino" yarn. Also, the first time I wore this hoodie (in the "wave light" green color) on a short day hike (an hour or two in Southern California in the winter), the tops of my shoulders got sunburned through it, which I've never had happen with either other merino tops or sun hoodies. I know this hoodie doesn't claim a UPF rating, but it does purport to offer sun protection. In my experience it does not. I haven't had durability issues other people have, but frankly that's probably because I haven't found it useful/usable enough to wear it more than a few times.

Great un protection

This is exactly what I was looking for to protect my skin while hiking. Im very fair and need extra protection while I hike at higher elevations. The length of the body and sleeves are perfect. I wish there was a little more room in the upper arm area, yet Im still giving it five stars.

I'm 6' tall and too many brands don't make clothes long enough.

I love merino wool

Wanted to love this hoodie in the gorgeous blue color but the medium was too small. The return policy worked well for me and was happy to have tried to make it work.

Great daily all-around trail shirt.

Really like Wuru's Nuyarn lightweight hoodie! Put it to the test wearing it almost every day for five weeks on the trail. Temps were 40s to 70s and it always felt comfortable hiking. I washed and rinsed it along the way but never noticed it smelling. Looked great every day -- and still does. I also love the Moss Green color.

I'm 6' 170# and the large is a tiny bit looser and longer in the arms than I like, but comfortable and allows room underneath for a base layer. (I dont' know if the long sleeve tech shirt base layer is sized the same, but I found that a medium in the base layer was OK, but a little tighter than I would want in a top layer like the hoodie, so I was probably better off getting the large hoodie.)

If you're trying to pack light and just use this one shirt, I found it handled almost any condition well, but I still wanted a jacket in cold winds and maybe a base layer if standing around in cold weather. Also, a light wool beanie or balaclava is nice under it in cold weather because the hood is pretty loose and doesn't add much warmth, which is as it should be for a sun hoodie. For full sun protection during the middle of the day I also added either a visor or a trail umbrella, because a hood can't provide full face coverage.

Extremely versatile!

Recently purchased the Nuyarn sun hoodie in charcoal and couldn’t be happier. I’ve worn the original sun hoodie for years as it’s my go to for just about any outdoor activity.
The Nuyarn fabric feels slightly heavier weight than the original which I really like. It fits true to size and I can already tell I’ll be wearing it just as much as the original.

Lovely shirt... very snug

The description says "athletic" or slim fit and boy do they mean it! Bought the XL based on guidelines and let's just say I need to shed a few pounds!

Great feel though, love the color. Need more color options :-)

Hey Paul,

We're glad to hear you're loving your hoodie.

Stay tuned for new colors to come. We'll likely introduce some new variants once we're low on the current fabric.

Thanks, we appreciate you!

So good!

This sunshirt is so good! I just used it for a four-day canoe-camping trip and it held up great to mud and bogs and hauling heavy packs on and off and scraping against branches. No weird sour smell like you'd get from a synthetic shirt! It protected my skin and wasn't too hot in 80+ degrees.
I'm 5'2 and normally wear an XS or S. I ordered a small, and it's a good fit with room to breathe.

Very pleased!

Great product. I had an issue in the order process and the customer service went above and beyond in rectifying the situation. They are a great company that makes great products.

Brian,

We appreciate your kind words.

In a world of big-name brands and automated emails that can go for days without a response, we're happy to keep things a bit 'old fashioned' as we work human to human to resolve all situations as promptly as we can.

We're also proud to say that this same quality can be tracked in our products.

Thanks!

Wuru for the win

Recently had 4 pre-cancers removed because I'm fair skinned and love being outside. I've always found synthetics to be hot and stinky. Invested in this sun shirt and I am so happy. So far I've hiked over 20 miles in it through various colorado summer weather and have absolutely loved it. I normally wear a M, but sized up to a L for some room, glad I did because I think the arms would have been too tight for my weight-lifing biceps.

ET,

We're glad you're loving your hoodie!

Kind words like yours always encourage the team. Our goal is to create a product that is durable, stylish, odor-resistant/antibacterial, and as close to universally sized as possible.

May it continue to serve you well.

Now my best base layer

`I ordered from Japan and was surprised at how quickly it arrived. First impressions’ it*s super soft, stretchy and feels great! I*ve used it on a few hiking trips, and it*s awesome. Even in Japan*s humid mountains at 90F, it stays comfortable. The color is beautiful too, and other hikers keep asking where I got it.
There was one minor issue about a missing thumb loop, but the Wuru team was wonderful in attending to it. I would definitely buy another one, once there are new colors.

Madoka,

We appreciate your understanding and are always happy to resolve any issues.

It's fantastic to see Wūru make its way worldwide, and we appreciate your kind words.

We hope your hoodie can continue to impress you and exceed your expectations.

Arigato!

I never leave reviews but this is truly my new favorite piece of gear. It fits slightly slim but generally TTS. The color is great (I got the green), fabric feels wonderful. I purchased this on sale but would honestly get another at full price if more bright colors were offered. I've worn it on a few warm Colorado hikes (high 80s, very sunny) and it's done a great job of staying cool. Have not experienced any issues with washing so far. This was exactly what I was looking for in a merino hoodie!

Hey,

We're glad that your hoodie is performing perfectly as intended.

Customer feedback like yours shows us we're doing everything right.

Thank you for the kind review and words.
